It’s August. This means New Beginnings!
August is a month of New Beginnings—an opportunity to gain a new perspective and start anew. This month, we are blessed with the possibility of new opportunities and outcomes, but we must also examine how we have stewarded what has already been given to us.
Matthew 25:23 tells the story of a master who entrusted his servant with two talents, and the servant made a profit and gained more talents. The Master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful and trustworthy over a little, I will put you in charge of many things; share in the joy of your master”. This passage is a good illustration of the importance and reward of good stewardship.
Many people are working hard, competing and vying for positions, titles, more money, etc., losing sight of the treasure they are able to put their hands on now. Why is this? Have you ever heard of the saying, “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach”? In essence, this means you are hungry for more, but have failed to consider your current capacity. Just because you want it does not mean you can handle it. Let’s talk about capacity more in-depth and how it’s developed.
It all begins with what has been allotted to you. If you are an employee but you want to be a business owner, consider how well you function working for others. Are you reliable? Are you punctual every day? Do you give your full attention to your job when you are there, or do you cut corners? Do you handle the affairs of work responsibly and work like it’s your own company?
Your capacity is developed and strengthened by every act of stewardship and responsibility that you put toward the things you have now. These simple acts increase your ability to handle more. To every degree of responsibility, endurance, patience, and skill that you grow, you also increase your capacity.
Don’t mishandle what you have now, thinking it will be different when you acquire more. How you steward your current affairs and responsibilities is indicative of how well you will steward opportunities in your future. I want to leave you with some tips on how to steward well.
Tip #1: Assess your portion. What is the current level of your responsibilities? What are you doing to enhance the system of how these things are managed, not just for you but for those seceding you or are connected to you? How well are you showing up for these responsibilities, and what can you do better? Lastly, are you carrying out these responsibilities with joy and contentment, being thankful for where you are now?
Tip #2: Develop a system. Take every opportunity to grow and learn more wherever you are now. Develop a system for conducting your current responsibilities and these systems will benefit you in future times.
Tip#3: Time Management. Develop good time management habits. Plan and manage your time in a way that’s beneficial to you. Having good time management will yield amazing results in your everyday efforts.
